Pro Tour Series: Beyond the obvious

We think we see the world around us for what it is but more often than not we tend to bend reality to conform to our way of imagining things. No matter how we see the world, the fact remains that we sometimes don’t see the bigger picture—then it’s time to look beyond the obvious.

Pro Tour Fridays are my favourite time to converse with the riders. Some of them had been practising at the Phakisa raceway since Thursday, trying to perfect their techniques through the 5 left hand- and 9 right hand corners the 4.24km track has to offer.

At eight in the morning the pit complex was already a hive of activity. Jovial and relaxed riders were getting ready for their allotted practise sessions. Well maybe not all of them; the Capo di tutti capi and some of his team mates were not yet in the house—not that I doubted for a moment that JB Schoeman and the rest of the clan will eventually pitch for this wonderful and exciting Pro Tour Kawasaki event.

The first practice session saw only a handful of riders taking on the cold and windy Phakisa race track. Sessions two and three were a different story as we saw twenty-one of the twenty-five Red Square Kawasaki ZX10R riders out on the track. Even the Capo di tutti capi made it to the second practice session after a broken trailer axle delayed their arrival at the motorsport capital of South Africa. Only Kyle Robinson #18, Paul Jacobs #37, the ever friendly Ashik (Appanna Ganapathy) #77 and the animal doctor, Stewart Christie #65 did not make it to the Friday practice sessions.

For most of these riders it may be an expensive self-funded hobby, but if you look beyond the obvious they are still fierce competitors in a sport they enjoy immensely.

At the end of the day, the Kawasaki ZX10R motorcycles and tools are neatly stacked away—while the riders take off for a well-deserved rest at their pre-booked accommodation—only to be unpacked again on race day Saturday.

With practice times ranging between 01:40 and 01:59 I looked forward to the real McCoy and some good natured individual competition. •
