Northern Regions Racing: Middle of the month Salticrax

Lying next to the N12 Witbank highway is one of the most exciting motorcycle racing circuits in the country. And after a very long dry spell it is once again time for action on one of my favourite motorcycle race circuits—Red Star Raceway, just outside Delmas.

Saturday morning and ominous clouds hang dark, cold and low over the peaceful country side. For a moment I thought I was back in England until the sound of thundering race bikes jolted me right back to the present. The freezing early morning wind blew at a moderate pace, but being used to North Eastern England winters Martine and I were not discourage as we got ready to embrace another day of exhilarating motorcycle racing action.

Now I’m sure you are all curious about the title of this article.
Don’t know how many of you can still remember the Salticrax advert, which aired on TV years ago, showing a cracker with all the toppings you can think of at the beginning of the month and how the toppings get less and less as the month progresses.

Well, middle of the month Salticrax was exactly what the turn-up at Saturday’s race event reminded me of.

The parking area was emptier than usual; competitor entries fewer than before and the grandstands cold and empty. I could’ve thought of a million reasons not to go, but only one nudge me out of bed at four o’clock on a Saturday—IT’S RED STAR!

Down at the farthest end of the Red Star racetrack Martine and I got ready for the greatest show on earth. This would be our first motorsport photography session out in weather fit for a man like Bear Grylls (exaggerating of course). Down the two back straights, at the farthest end of the racetrack, bikes passed us at lightning speed, emitting thunderous roars into an open landscape.

I’ve noticed the Joker’s transformation-in-progress; eventually we will not be able to tell man and machine apart. Birds flying overhead might fall out of the sky, blinded and disorientated by the nr 22 (122) Chrome-Dome. Typically the Joker reaped havoc during both races, being able to reach speeds of up to 285km at Red Star (that was from the horse’s mouth).
As usual Gavin Lightfoot put in a good fight... Now this is one scoot jockey that can bend his body like warm liquorice, adapting to the demands of the track on his Kawasaki ZX10R race bike. Although Gavin Lightfoot came second in his class and third overall I’m sure he will give the younger guys a run for their money if he had the same performance race bike.

Even though Red Star was not packed to the brim with spectators, the day was still a huge success, just like a plain Salticrax—still enjoyable. For those who attended the day’s proceedings (spectators as well as competitors) it was still worth the drive to this remote racetrack.
This coming weekend Zwartkops is hosting the Wesbank Super Series again and if all goes according to plan, you will see me there. •
