Cars in the Park 2011

The enthusiastic crowd at this awesome event seem to get bigger and bigger every year. Cars-in-the-Park is a great success, nobody can deny that. Shiny relics from all over the country make their way to the well organised Zwartkops Raceway. Most of us that don't own a historic piece might even blush with envy, but Martine and I are here to appreciate the moment, to try and relive history, and to capture a few of these relics on electronic film. The old and the new - ironic?

Unfortunately history can’t be repeated, even though we sometimes pray it would. Some of us honestly believing (or maybe we hope) that the future will bring more of these great Kings of the Road. Some of the cars are still in their original skin while others are newly restored or even pimped, shamelessly stating that these relics are beyond history. Owners don't just restore these cars, they are fused into the mechanical DNA of these inanimate metal creatures. With all the young ones showing interest, I truly believe that the end in not nigh.

The entire winding stretch of the Zwartkops Raceway is filled with beautiful cars: Cadillac, Pontiac, Vauxhall, Renault, Citroën... everywhere you see cheerful faces appreciating what they see in front of them. A grandfather is explaining to his grandson how it was back then, while grandma, lazing in her Camp Master, nods off to somewhere in the 50's. Across the hot black tarmac a women is calling her husband at the top of her voice, pointing out a Studebaker he overlooked. Observing this, I immediately assumed she must have had her first romantic encounter in the back seat of one of these fine machines. Only the she will know.

People don't come to Cars-in-the-Park for ice cream, nor do they come here for the fresh air (now that's debatable), they come here to relive yesterday. Next year they will most probably do it all over again. •
